According to Webster's Revised Unabridged (1913 + 1828) the word train means to train up, to educate, to teach, to form by instruction or practice, to bring up, and to discipline.
It is important to train our children using the principles of the word of God.
Colossians 3:20-21 "Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing to the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke or irritate or fret your children [do not be hard on them or harass them], lest they become discouraged and sullen and morose and feel inferior and frustrated, [Do not break their spirit.] (Amplified)
Although the Bible says that children are to obey their parents, it is important for parents not to bully their children into doing their chores. God holds them accountable to be motivated by love in training their children; and 1 Corinthians 13:8 says the love of God never fails.
Psalm 127:3 says they are a heritage from the Lord, and they are his reward.. This is what God said about Abraham in Genesis 18:18-19 "Abraham will surely become a great nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him. For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, so that the LORD will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him." (NIV)
We can use doing chores as an opportunity to train our children to develop the principles of the word of God. In most cases, children hate doing chores. However, as Christians, they have to be taught that the word of God says the just shall live by faith. Living by faith means we are not moved by how we feel, but we are only moved by what the word of God says. Now that they are born of God, they have to walk in the newness of life. They have to practice walking in the spirit at all times. Walking in the spirit will help them to develop a godly character because that is the nature of God. By the time they reach adulthood, they will become successful at anything they want to accomplish, regardless of challenging it may be.
Galatians 5:22-23 tells us that the fruit of the born again spirit is Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self control. Bible scholars read that scripture in the following manner, the fruit of the spirit is Love, which produces, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self control.
TEACHING OUR CHILDREN THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT
1. LOVE: Most of the children associate doing chores with punishment. However, as parents, it is important for us to teach them that doing chores is part of training them up according to the word of God. This love is already in their hearts. Romans 5:5 says, the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost. They just have to choose to walk in it. God said if we love Him, we will keep His commandments. Doing chores with a loving and obedient heart is pleasing to God.
